A week of no great accomplishments---
Corporate profits at an all time high while middle class wealth has dropped 23% in 10 years....

I am about half way through "Surviving off Off Grid" by Michael Bunker. This is an interesting book focusing on the mental requirements of surviving completely off the grid by choice or through societal demise. This is not a how to book but more of a philosophical treaty on how your thoughts and desires will have to change. The overriding problem with the book is religion---Mr. Bunker is apparently a very hard core old time religion person and although he does discuss how to get around his religious viewpoints within the book---it makes it hard for a pagan like myself to cut to the chase, so to say, in finding the nuggets of wisdom that are definitely there. Buy this book only if you are willing to skip pages and pages of bible quotations hiding very real, very good concepts of mentally being off the grid. Not recommended for everyone.
Good films are rare but to view two excellent films on DVD in one week is a miracle...
THE MAN FROM NOWHERE is a outstanding Korean film featuring gangsters, organ selling, and friendship.
The Man from Nowhere centers on a quiet pawnbroker who is the neighborhood mystery...his only friend, a little girl, whose mother is a junkie breaks his isolation. When the girl's mother steals drugs from her supplier she and the little girl are sold by the gangsters for their organs.
The Man from Nowhere turns out to be a widowed, medically retired Korean special forces officer who sets out to recover the little girl...
The film is just excellent, there are several outstanding knife fights where everyone, hero and bad guy get badly cut, and these fights are with simple folding knives or kitchen type knives...This is a story of friendship and duty...you will be both astounded at some of the action scenes and heartbroken by the little girl...you need to see this film....watch it in the original Korean with subtitles---dubbed English is for pukes.
The second excellent DVD of the week is THE AMERICAN with George Clooney. I was completely surprised at how much I liked this film. Clooney portrays a combination hit man and covert gunsmith operating freelance in Europe. Clooney who is usually a real Verbal Kint (obscure reference) in his movies speaks about 50 words throughout the entire film which fits his character's silent, gray man world. The trade craft displayed is excellent...Clooney's character wears a Omega Speedmaster (my all time most desired watch)----and creates his own small world of precision and discipline while hiding out in a small Italian village building a rifle for another hitter---- the film is definitely worth viewing.
It is not a fragrant world.

Recently saw on the history channel I believel a guy telling you how to fall off the grid. It included a cash only soceity and even there warned that the cash can be tracked. Mention never repeat old routines from you public life. Change your appearance by simply donning a hat if you didn't wear a hat wear glasses instead of contacts. Use burn phones and change your number and phone frequently. It was difentily worth watching. He was PI I beleive who specialized in finding people so he had a insight.
